Common Laptop Issues

One of the great advantages of owning a laptop or notebook is the fact that they are so portable, they can be carted about and used almost anywhere. The obvious disadvantage to this being the fact that your laptop is regularly being put in harms way. As a result we often see problems caused by physical stress, such as:

  • broken screen
  • cracked motherboards
  • dodgy power connections
  • unresponsive batteries

Whatever brand of laptop or notebook, we have experience in repairing them all, including: HP, Dell, Compaq, Acer, IBM, Lenovo, etc.

Overheating
Despite their name Laptops should never be used directly on your lap. Nor should they be placed on the bed, carpeted floor etc. If you must use your notebook in this manner always place it on a tray or another hard flat surface. Like any computer if the components overheat you will lose performance and risk permanent damage. Unfortunately with a laptop all the components are crammed together inside the case making ventilation difficult, so it is important that when using it you allow some clearance underneath to make the limited ventilation slightly better.

Insufficient Memory
Another factor that can affect the performance of any computer is not enough memory. For some reason when purchasing a laptop people are far more concerned about the aesthetics of the machine than they would be if buying a desktop or a tower. How big is it? Does it have a touch screen? What Colours does it come in? Manufacturers are well aware of this and try to pack in as many whistles and bells as they can, whilst providing less memory than they would in a similar desktop model (for the more tech-spec savvy crowd). Inadequate memory effects the speed of everything from starting the computer up, browsing, watching videos, editing images, etc, etc. If you’re short on RAM, upgrading your memory is a relatively inexpensive operation and it will increase your laptop’s performance considerably.
